Dear LiJian,
On Friday September 17,1999 I had the pleasure of attending the opening of the exhibition of four artists at the Shanghai Art Museum. I was introduced to one of the artist by a friend but in all the confusion and excitement I took little notice of the introduction. The gentleman was kind enough to give me his card; fortunately, I saved it along with my program.
After the opening ceremony I went up stairs to view the exhibition and found it to be most interesting. I rarely if ever read labels on paintings or pay much |

attention to thenames of the artist but in this instance it did not matter because I am so ignorant that I can not read Chinese. My major interest is in the art and the artist intentions not the artist or his reputation. To me art is the universal language by which people can communicate thoughts, ideas, and emotions. It also tells enough about the artist and his way of thinking that other information is superfluous.
All four of the painters represented were obviously competent artist and well deserving of being exhibited. But with three of the artist I found their work was focused on their technique to a point that they were not only repetitious and predictable but also very self-conscious. They had found a striking approach to their subject matter and except of changing the colors their work seemed to be limited intellectually to a style that they found comfortable, inescapable or just sensational. It was unnecessary to see more than just one each of their paintings to know what the next one would be. But the work of the last painter I looked at was by far the most interesting-to me. His work showed that he was not only interested in the world about him, but was able to convey his deep feeling for his subject. Each of his paintings was refreshingly different, each an exciting visual experience, and each a profoundly intense statement. As an artist he was able to explore his craft with confidence and expertise. To me he was able to display not only his agility with his medium but also able to express his deep love for life and the beauty he saw in everything about him. His work was without a doubt the expression of what I consider to be “a true artist”. The entire gallery could have been filled with his paintings and it would not have been monotonous or boring.
Latter at home alone with the exhibition still on my mind I began to wonder which artist work it was that I found most appealing. I checked my program with the card the gentleman I had met gave me and found to my great surprise that it was the same person whose painting I was most impressed with. I was not only delighted but felt compelled to write and let you know my impressions of the exhibition and also to thank you for the privilege of being able to view your paintings. I hope to see more of your outstanding work in the future at other exhibitions. Please consider me one of your most avid admirers. I feel greatly honored to have met you.
With sincere regards
